Larger Than Life Novella Single edition by Jodi Picoult Literature Fiction eBooks

Larger Than Life is a short story prequel to Leaving Time, the twenty-first full length novel by popular American author, Jodi Picoult. It introduces naturalist, Alice Metcalf, a key character in Leaving Time and details some of her history. In Botswana, Alice comes across an elephant calf that has survived the massacre of her herd by poachers. What she does next could jeopardise her whole career. Picoult has obviously done a lot of research into her subject: even this short taster gives the reader interesting facts about elephant herds, in particular the importance of the matriarch, and some of the effects of poaching. In true Picoult fashion, this story is informative and thought-provoking as well as being at times funny and very moving. The download also includes the first chapter of Leaving Time. Readers will eagerly devour this free offering in anticipation of the publication of Picoult’s upcoming novel.

Larger Than Life Novella Single edition by Jodi Picoult Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a short and quick read, but it packs quite a punch. Although it includes research scientist Alice's brief romantic connection with a man, the real love story in this book revolves around her dedication and devotion to elephants. Picoult provides plenty of fascinating information about the intelligence and behavior of these amazing animals, and she also offers some horrid details about their plight at the hand of poachers and other well-meaning, but ill-informed, people.

Sprinkled with bits of humor and heart-breaking realities, this book is one you'll remember. If you don't love elephants before you read it, I betcha will afterwards.
Let me start by saying that in the past I've thoroughly enjoyed Jodi Picoult novel's--I started with My Sister's Keeper and read a few others, including Plain Truth (which was probably my favorite). It had been several years since I had picked up on of her novels, and so I decided that it was time to give another one a whirl for a light read. I was expecting an easy read, but something that is at the same time thought provoking and poses some sort of moral dilemma, delving into the intricacies of human relationships.

What I received was frustration and and what felt like a very shallow portrayal of humanity.

The primary point of contention for me with the book was that I felt it was overly simplistic and unrealistic. I realize that Picoult writes fiction, and with that genre comes certain freedoms, but I also think that this type of fiction needs to be believable for it to be a quality story. The story began to become very unbelievable when the African rangers came into the story and in the ways they interacted with the main character (a young American researcher who studied at an Ivy League school). I will say that I've never traveled to Africa, but I have traveled extensively throughout the United States and Asia, briefly in the Caribbean, and have done some research into varying cultural patterns and norms. Linguistically and culturally, these two groups of people would never interact with each other the way they do in this story in this short of a time. From the relationships that are formed, to the idioms that non-native English speakers in the story use, to cultural expectations set for each other, the characters' relationships are unrealistic--to the extent that I considered not finishing the book. This may be my own personal sensitivity to culture, but I definitely found that it detracted from the overall quality of the story. This in turn made the main character's relationship with her mother somewhat less believable and shallow also. Because that was supposed to be the meat of the story, the lack of substance meant that the core of the story of lost. I'm no expert on elephants, but this feature of the book also made me question the validity of the elephant details in the story.

Additionally, the timeline of the story seemed a little bit ridiculous. I realize that a novella is shorter and has less space to cover a plot, but that doesn't mean that depth of character and reality need to get sacrificed. The way that suddenly paperwork got processed at the end of the story seemed very unrealistic and again, detracted from the quality of the story.
I was very much interested to read more about the character(s) from Leaving Time and this didn't disappoint. I did expect some of the twists but only because I know a considerable amount of elephant information. (That's all I'll say about that. No "spoilers.") As with Leaving Time, the author has a realistic approach to her subject from both research and experience, so far as the elephants and the setting are concerned. I would have cared about these characters even if I hadn't read Leaving Time, and been hungry for more. I'm still hungry for more! Maybe there will be other novellas about other times in the character's life...
This was a wonderful read as well as a precursor to Leaving Time due in October. We had been told about Leaving Time, set in the context of a researching studying grief in elephants, however Picoult once again humanizes her characters to the extent that you are captured by them. Alice's work of studying grief in elephants mirrors her own relationship with her mother from which her lack of several aspects about herself come from. She does a wonderful job of setting the context for the development of the characters as well as the ways in which they change or remain the same. Picoult has worked her magic once again, I got this for free during for the week in which she mentioned that this would be free and am so glad that I did. Moreover, I was so surprised and elated that there is a glimpse of Leaving Time through an excerpt. I can't wait for that book to come out and hopefully I will be getting her newest book signed during her book tour this October! Wonderful read, it was delivered wireless therefore immediately for whenever I wanted to get to it. Reading her short story may be a great introduction to those unfamiliar with her work. This would also be a wonderful gift to anyone who enjoys her book since its offered on all platforms and most devices for those who don't prefer the physical book format.
