False Memory Dean Koontz 9780553580228 Books

As a teenager I loved Dean Koontz. Coming back to his books as a well read adult whos actually read books on weiting has been an eye opening experience. The issues I stumbled upon in his writing are not what I would expect from an acclaimed writer but then again the general public thought Twilight and Fifty shades were readable. The biggest writing issues for Knootz are over explaining. Its the mark of an insecure writer who fears being misunderstood so they over explain and go into excruciating detail. As it was koontz went into excruciating detail in this book and he did so often. What could have been said with a few sentences or less was said repetitively from multiple vantage points. I almost put the book down but I was stuck some where with no other reading material so I persisted. I also found the characters rather flat. I wont be reading Knootz any time soon.

Ok, probably never.

Sometimes I will recommend a book with poor or immature writing issues because the pros out weight the cons. This is not the case here.

False Memory Dean Koontz 9780553580228 Books Reviews

Since I learned to read I have never gone more than a week without beginning a new book. Dean Koontz is a great author and I have read a great many of his books. Of them all I would say that False Memory is my favorite. Reading this story was chilling and thought provoking but also full of the best kind of romance a book can possess. The Loyal private thoughts that come from true love and manifest into the small things that are only noticed if that love is mirrored, on the same level by someone else. I found myself thinking about the book while at work, the grocery store, just generally any time that I was not reading it. Readers will walk away from this experience with a craving for more information about the human psyche. Readers will have a new respect for both the strength and vulnerability of our own mental freedom and control. Finally, readers will feel -as I feel- that this book will not squeeze into the part of our minds that file away a good read and forget it by the first chapter of the next novel they begin, only to be remembered if a very limited number of scenarios brings it to mind but instead, will be impacted on so many different planes of emotions that it will continue playing short scenes in the back of their minds sporadically and frequently.

I know this review is very poorly written. I am after all a reader, not a writer. I've never written a review but I really wanted to praise the hell out of this book.
I usually devour a Koontz novel, and I started this book and I have to admit that it was just not grabbing me, so I put it down for a few months. I went back to it and I finished it quickly. There was so much set up, it was necessary to the plot, but at the first read it was just dragging. Then it picked up and I ended up really enjoying it.
This was my 2nd reading of this book - the first being several years ago. Mr. Koontz is a master of suspense & never fails to keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat to the very end. Even though I read this book before & had a general recollection of the plot, I was nevertheless unable to put it down for long. I highly recommended this book.
One of the first books I ever read from Dean Koontz, this novel set the stage and expectations for all future works I would read from the author. It is a tale of how powerful persuasion of the mind can be, and it is a captivating read. I cannot and will not summarize it as it would take away from the experience of enjoying the book, so I say that it is an awesome read, and if you've never branched into Koontz stories, this is a great one to start reading.
I became a fan of Dean Koontz, for a short time, back in the mid to late 90's. Then, for a period of 20 yrs, both life got in the way (trying to survive and then raise a family) and I then relegated myself to only reading the classics, when I could or classics in the making (Nathan Englander, et al.) Well, now I'm back to reading Dean Koontz and I couldn't be happier. As a former orphan, foster child and scared teen mother, who saw the dark side of so many fake smiles, trying to find my way in this "cruel" world and, so many times, questioning reality or why I even bothered; to now a warm, strong, wise woman, with humility, who made it and has been moderately successful in life and as a mom (my greatest achievement), I find that Dean's characters are well fleshed out, ring true and they resonate with me and my own perceptions of life, very well. His protagonists have heart and are likeable and the evil that lurks, as in real life, often comes at you with a smile; such a deadly weapon. This long nugget of a story was no different and I enjoyed it very much. That his stories have happy endings does not bother me at all, even if they sometimes don't feel like they would play out well in real life and you think, "That would never happen; in real life they'd be alone, dead or homeless!" Because, unlike in real life, where happy endings are often withheld, in the magical land where the characters of books reside, you get to change that. And for some of us, these stories and happy endings have even sustained us and given us that sliver of hope we've always needed.
