I really enjoyed this novel, the second in her series (but I ended up reading it first.) I liked how the heroine was developed (my favorite character in this series so far), and although I wanted to shake some sense into the hero a couple of times, I thought he was well-drawn and rather realistic. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series!

Colin and Elinor have known each other for years. They bicker quite often and absolutely don't seem to suit in any way. So it surprises Colin when he realizes he has fallen for Elinor. Unfortunately for the poor sap, right before he is about to propose, his plans are thwarted, So he hardens his heart to the reality that she can never be his.
Years later, Elinor is on the brink of being a spinster, and is helping Colin's younger sister find a husband during the Season. Colin's family has some bad history that they are all trying to work through, and Elinor falls into the search for answers. This puts Elinor and Colin in closer proximity, and they must work together to figure out the past and exact vengeance.
This romance started off a bit slow and boring, but it definitely picked up around 30% to 35%. I hated Colin's drinking problem. I understand the need for some inebriating distraction, but this guy was an extreme alcoholic. I think that should have been downplayed a little. There were some predictable parts to the story, but Kathleen Kimmel still turned me around a time or too which was great. The romance is strong, and I did like that it got a bit exciting here and there.
I very much enjoyed this read and only didn't give it a five star rating because of the slow beginning. I'm glad I pushed through it because the rest of the book was everything I look for in a historical romance. You do not have to read the prior books in the series, but they were both great as well so I say go for it! I hope to see the next in this series soon. I have no idea who it would feature, though! Oh the suspense!

Kathleen Kimmel again has written a historical fiction that engages the reader from the beginning. Her ability to develop characters and use a setting that the reader can immerse themselves in is what drew me into this story. There is excitement, love, passion and intrigue from the beginning pages and although the reader can predict the ending there is plenty of story to get you there.
Elinor has known Colin for a long time however has never saw him as anything but annoying however when he kisses her unexpectedly her feelings begin to change. Just when she decides that Colin might be worth pursuing she finds out that he has announced his engagement.
Colin has always had a crush on Elinor but she has never shown any interest and goes out of her way to ignore him. Pressured to marry by his father he announces his engagement but realizes after he kisses Elinor that there is no way that he will ever be satisfied.
When the past comes to haunt both Elinor and Colin they have to join forces to survive.
The story is fast moving and keeps the reader turning pages. I personally love Kathleen Kimmel books and I know I will be on the lookout for others. A delightful read for a spring weekend.

Jeeze. I was muttering "Why don't you tell her you love her?" all the way through this book and it didn't occur to the hero until page 268 of a 298-page book. Really rather frustrating when a romance hero is that obtuse. And yet...and yet...I've rated this a 4-star romance, in spite of the dimwitted hero. In spite of everything, I enjoyed the romance, liked the characters (with some reservations with regard to the hero), thought the writing was excellent and the dialogue crisp and witty and touching at times. This was a pretty complete read for me.
This is Kimmel's second full-length novel in her Birch Hall Romance series. The first, A LADY'S GUIDE TO RUIN, was Kimmel's debut HR and, although well written, it was not as enjoyable as this one. The hero of this one is Colin Spenser, Marquess of Farleigh, best friend of Martin Hargrove, hero of the first book. Colin has been quietly suffering from unrequited love (or so he believes) for Elinor, Martin's twin sister, for years. Just when he had been planning to offer for her she became engaged to another, so he stuffed his feelings back into his sleeve. Even when her fiance dies, he doesn't say anything. Jeeze again.
So now here we are in the present of the story. Colin still hiding his feelings and even acting like a bit of a jerk around Elinor, so she's a bit conflicted about her feelings for him. There's some attraction but, you know, he's such a jerk to her. But when they discover that the husband of Marie, Colin's sister and Elinor's best friend who died in India, is back in England, they, independent of each other, make arrangements to be at a rather decadent house party of gentlemen and courtesans where this guy Foyle is hiding out. (They suspect Foyle of having killed Marie and want revenge.)
Well, the rest is to read. It's far more interesting and with a more complicated plot than most HRs I've read recently. And, as I've said already, the writing is very good. Only drawback, again as already said, is that Colin is a bit annoyingly weak, with a tendency to brood and feel sorry for himself. Elinor, on the other hand, is quite delightful, And the secondaries are very well drawn. Colin's mother, for example, is a bit of a hoot. Loved her.
Good book. I'm glad I read it. I'm also glad that I got it from the library. No romance is worth paying out $7.99 for, IMO.
I absolutely loved it. Wishing both weren't so stubborn but it made it all the better. Loved all the characters!
